Located in one of the most populous cities in the world, New York universities attract international students from over 130 countries. This article will discuss a few of the scholarships available to international students at NYU.
1. The New York University School of Law Scholarship
NYU Law is a leader in legal education and continually adapts to ensure that graduates are optimally equipped for the 21st century legal marketplace. These adaptations include foreign study programs in Buenos Aires and Paris; the Legislative and Regulatory Process Clinic in Washington, DC; and dynamic seminar classes that combine academic and professional experiences.
Its commitment to diversity also extends beyond the classroom. Its AnBryce Scholarship program provides full scholarships and mentoring support for first-generation law students who are overcoming challenging socioeconomic circumstances.
Many scholarships are available, including Dean’s awards that cover the cost of tuition for incoming students. These are based on merit and/or need. Other scholarships require a special application and may have additional requirements, such as an essay or explanation of why the student is a good candidate for the award. Examples of such specialized scholarships include the Institute for International Law and Justice Joyce Lowinson Scholars Program and the Hauser Global Law School Scholarship.
2. The State University of New York at Fredonia Dean’s Scholar Award
This scholarship was established by Anthony, '48 and Elizabeth DiChiara in memory of their son, David. It is intended to support a student majoring in either science or business. The student should be a resident of the central NY area (Oneida, Herkimer, Madison, and/or Otsego counties), exhibiting a high level of academic achievement, as well as financial need.
This scholarship is awarded to a student in the College of Arts and Sciences who is a Pell Grant eligible candidate with a good average. This is a one-time award. The student must be studying a subject related to the humanities, social sciences or the natural sciences and is an incoming freshmen with at least 90% of their high school academic average.
3. The City University of New York Scholarship
The City University of New York Scholarship is an excellent option for international students who want to pursue a graduate or undergraduate degree. The scholarship covers tuition costs for any remaining gap after federal and state aid like Pell grants and New York’s need-based Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) awards are applied. Eligibility includes authorized NYCHA public housing and Section 8 recipients who are enrolled in either undergraduate or graduate CUNY programs.
The scholarship is renewable as long as the student remains a full-time student and makes satisfactory academic progress. The award will be converted to a loan if the student does not meet these academic standards and does not reapply for the next term.
CUNY offers many scholarships, grants and other financial assistance for its students. There are also thousands of outside scholarship opportunities to consider. The first step is to fill out the FAFSA and apply for New York State TAP or Excelsior. Then, complete all admissions requirements for the college of your choice.
4. The New York City Department of Education Scholarship
Many local New York foundations, organizations, and government programs provide scholarships for students to cover the cost of college. Some require a special application, essay, letters of recommendation, or other criteria. To find local scholarship opportunities, consult a scholarship directory or search online. Be sure to report any outside awards to the Office of Financial Aid.
The New York City Department of Education Scholarship is one of the top full scholarships in New York for international students who are interested in studying criminal justice or social work. Applicants must be first-generation immigrants attending public high school in NYC and have at least a 3.2 GPA. The scholarship is available for up to four years of undergraduate study.
New York state’s Excelsior Scholarship pays for any uncovered tuition costs at SUNY and CUNY schools. However, students must be enrolled full time and commit to working in the state for as long as they’ve received the award.
